Joyfilled Life - Dr. Annette ColbyIf you have taken a few detours in life, perhaps forgotten your true purpose, or are feeling lost and empty, do not worry so much. Everything is all right, and all your experiences are immensely valuable, even if you cannot see it in this exact moment. You will. You are a capable, empowered, self-adjusting, self-balancing human being. You are already in the process of setting yourself back on an appropriate course. Take a breath and realize that everything is okay, even though everything in your life is not exactly as you would wish.

Most of us do not pay attention to the smaller, day-to-day occurrences that make us happy. We tend to focus on the negative and, all too easily, share all the things that go wrong. We have selective memory and remember our struggles more vividly than life situations that flowed smoothly. It is easy to take for granted the goodness and joy that is already available in our lives, while getting lost in a torrent of emotional wounds, anxiety about problems, and other negative thoughts.

To overcome this tendency, become a person who goes out into the world deliberately searching for positive experiences. Actively seek opportunities to improve your lot on a daily basis. Smell the delicious aroma of your food, taste the robustness of your coffee, or smile at the grocery cashier. Receive compliments and provide heartfelt acts of kindness. It does not matter how big or small the gesture. Just take control and acknowledge life experiences that feel good to you. Happiness involves developing a sensory relationship with life itself and knowing that you are connected to the physicality of earth. To reinforce this new pattern of opening your body to receive joy, consider adding a few of these choices into your daily diet:

  • Eat delicious food and activate every sense while eating.
  • Sing from your heart and dance from your soul.
  • Do kind things for yourself.
  • Engage in activities that make you feel great to be alive.
  • Give yourself positive feedback.
  • Take action on the goals that are important to you.
  • Learn to relieve stress.

Decide that you deserve to feel good in life. Take a few moments to sit still, breathe deeply, and relax even just a little. Notice what is right with your world, engage your senses, and open up to the goodness already present. It may be cliché, but when you stop to smell the roses, the world really is a brighter, happier place to live in. Gently shift your focus more intently on generating emotions that feel good. Activate the power of imagination. What would an enjoyable life look like? What thoughts and dreams warm your heart and invite your spirit? What could you do today that would make you feel gladder to be alive? When you deliberately focus your attention on the positive, purposely seeking the aspects of life that you crave, you will find that they are already here. Reflecting on what is right with your world and with yourself results in greater enthusiasm, determination, joy, serenity, and energy.

Today, and every day, take at least one daily action step that you believe will contribute to your enjoyment of your body and life!

Hi Kathleen,

Two nights ago, I finally got around to watching the touching movie “The Bucket List” starring Morgan Freeman (Carter) and Jack Nicholson (Edward). Your coffee lover’s comment reminds me of the hilariously funny moment when Carter shares the origins of Edward’s beloved Kopi Luwak coffee. It really is a “laugh until you cry” moment.

Movies like this can touch our spirits and inspire us to stay diligent to bringing more joy into our lives.
