Hi Liz!

Thanks for writing. "The Rose" is an awesome song. Performed by Bette Midler, it's one of those songs that reaches directly into the heart and elicits hope.

To listen to a free presentation of the song, visit http://www.last.fm/music/Bette+Midler/_/The+Rose

Below are the lyrics to "The Rose" by Bette Midler

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
and you it's only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin'
that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been to long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the winter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

Oh, I so love that song, "The Rose." I especially love the end, which of course is what this is about -- the blooming after darkness.

Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom!

It’s so awesome when I hear someone saying that they accept personal responsibility. I’m inspired, because when a person accept responsibility, an entire new world opens up. It’s a world with substance and passion, direction and meaning. Personal responsibility allows you to know who you are, what you like, and to affirm yourself positively. In short - you TRUST yourself!

I get a sense that when you talk about "being impulsive" "acting on something" and "letting the chips fall where they may" that those are all consciously aware decisions. You are the sole determinant of the choices you make. No matter how things turn out, you know you had a choice. All choices lead to experiences. There really is no right, no wrong, and no mistakes to be made. There is just experience. To be the conscious choser of our own experience is to live in a heightened state of enlightenment.

Thank you again for sharing your beautiful Self with us all!
With joy,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Your article reminds me of the song "The Rose". Now that Winter is upon us, I find it is a time for reflection. It is the same as a cloudy day.....we know the sun is still shining, but we just can't see it! If we stop and remember this, we will know that life will go on.....it is all part of the journey.

I have experienced firsthand most of the things you have listed above and they weren't all pleasant feelings. However, I have learned from my experiences that things do change. I have always had a sense of being different and there are very few people in my life, both past and present, to whom I feel connected with. I've come to believe that this is a personal choice. A prime example is that I'm not a materialistic person.....I don't care whether my towels match in the bathroom or whether my furniture is all the same colour wood! I have moved house several times in my life and love giving things away. I find that as I age, my interests change. I now have a new awareness of personal responsibility towards myself. However, I can still be impulsive.....act on something and let the chips fall where they may. If I regret it, then it is true.......sometimes personal growth may make a person feel bad. But, at least, we learn by our mistakes.

Merry Christmas,
Kathleen
