I used to consider the words “higher consciousness” and “awakening” and “enlightenment” as some of those strange airy-fairy words that would never make their way into my vocabulary. I was far too intellectual to be one of “those” fringe types of people. I have since not only come to understand what those words mean, I have experienced them within myself. And because of the mentoring work that I do, I am also seeing an awakening of higher consciousness in others.
What I am referring to is a shift toward the potential held within each human being, and the importance of growth and self-actualization. Awakening is a process through which we discover that we are so much more than we think we are. We each came into this life with a plan and a purpose, one that we often placed on the backburner or forgotten about altogether. Yet this amazing authentic self lies silently inside, waiting for us to awaken and remember why we came here to Earth during this particular time of evolution and change.
As we heal the confusion and step away from chaos, we begin to wake up. As we place emphasis on making choices that align with our true nature, our spirit comes alive. We begin to remember who we really are. We begin remember what we came here to do.
Many are willing to make the effort to be introspective and risk discovering if we have the ability to effect change in our own emotions, our own life, and in the world. In the process of introspection we gain increased discernment about recognizing when we rationalize, blame, lie, play victim, or act defensively. We realize where we give away to others the love we most want for ourselves.
This process of self-awareness leads to forgiveness. We pave the way to an increase in self-worth and self-love, and a growing ability to recognize that we have the freedom to choose how we experience life. We are waking up, wanting to know who we are, and why we are here.
If you are waking up yourself, then you know it can sometimes be a bumpy ride as we move beyond the rational concrete mind to the not so familiar landscape of intuitive knowing. Remember to breathe consciously, often. Breathing allows you to listen to your inner wisdom. Conscious breathing allows you to slow down and take the time to move beyond reactionary responses, reflect, and gain new perspective.
Awakening to a higher consciousness is how we connect with our higher purpose and aid humanity at this time of world evolution. It is time for us to step into spiritual awareness and forge a new relationship with life and creation. When we answer the call to our individual awakening consciousness, we play our part in the miracle of life being reborn.

The road to higher conscious awareness is often bumpy and painful. Having allowed myself to heal many old wounds and fears has shown me that the pain felt in the moment is tiny when compared to the peace that moves with me from that moment on. It can be hard not to get lost in the emotions but I remind myself to breath and know that no emotion lasts forever and I will get through this. As always, your words are inspiring.
Hi Annette,
It never fails that I find nuggets of wisdom and truth when I come to your web site looking for some insight into feelings I have been having! Your posts about awakening higher consciousness are great food for thought.
For the past couple of years now I have been on a journey away from low self-esteem, depression and food addictions to reach a point where I love living life in ways I never knew possible. One thing I find myself asking myself “what’s next?” on this journey. It’s been amazing, but through all the work I have completed, I am not the same person spiritual as I was most of my life. I seek to make my life one of giving of myself, to be a positive influence on the world around me, to contribute to the world rather than just take from it. I hear this “calling” me in my heart, but it is a whisper, a hint, that I have been trying to define, to listen more closely to. I always felt it would be some sort of flashing neon sign, but it isn’t! Any additional thoughts on how to “listen” to your heart are welcome … frankly, this is very new territory for me, having lived my life being reactive to my environment rather than proactive. What a beautiful journey lies ahead of all of us! Thanks Annette for everything you do! – Jim
Hi Jim,
Thanks for your comments and your inspiration. This journey of awakening higher consciousness is quite a journey isn’t it?! This journey often leads us through low self-esteem, depression, and food addictions as we bring ourselves back into wholeness.
As you have successfully released suffering and drama, you have discovered your ability to make conscious choices, to breathe through difficult emotions as they heal, and to trust your intuition implicitly.
Intuition, or listening to your heart, is difficult to describe because intuition is you. It’s not like someone outside of you who talking to you in a voice. And it’s not your disconnected spirit voice talking at you either. Intuition is YOU. It is what you feel, what you know, and what you understand.
In my newly released my book Depression Freedom, I devoted an entire chapter to the necessity of listening to our intution to get through this journey of awakening consciousness. I talk about what intuition “sounds” like, why we don’t trust it, and why listening to our intuition is absolutely important to living a life of freedom of joy. As Joni James, author of Doorways to Freedom writes, “This book (Depression Freedom) is a must not only for those who are suffering from depression, but for anyone who is on a path of growth and enlightenment.
I offer my deepest gratitude as you continue to share the ups and downs of your beautiful journey with us here at Divine Self! Wishing you infinitely expanding peace and love.
